Ben Gerritsen
Ben Gerritsen GJ (* 25. October 1948 in Gorssel , † 2. June 2016 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch jazz vibraphonist, composer and bandleader .
Live and act
Gerritsen originally played the piano before switching to the vibraphone at the age of nineteen . After training at the conservatory, he worked as a sideman a. a. with Loek Dikker , John Engels , Charlie Mariano , Albert Mangelsdorff , Jasper van't Hof , David Friedman , Jeffrey Wilson , Han Bennink and Jan Wolfkamp .
He has appeared as a guest and soloist with groups such as Farrago , New Association , Sharpwood , Mr. Averell and the percussion ensemble of Martin van Duynhoven . With Henk Alkema he forms the duo Double Scorpio . He leads two ensembles of his own, the Ben Gerritsen Quartet and the Ben Gerritsen Band (with Leo van Oostrom , Willem Kühne , Wim Essed and Arnoud Gerritse ), with whom he performs at jazz festivals in Montreux , Berlin , Vienna and Nancy and at the North Sea Jazz Festival performed and recorded two albums with his own compositions. In 1997 and 1999 he was elected Mallet Player of the Benelux by Slagwerkkrant magazine .
