Guðrið Helmsdal
Guðrið Helmsdal Nielsen , née Poulsen (born February 28, 1941 in Tórshavn , Faroe Islands ) is considered the first female modern poet in the Faroese language .
Guðrið [ ˈguːɹɪ ] is the daughter of Annie Helmsdal and Hans Poulsen. In 1953 the parents moved to Denmark, where their father worked as a captain. At the age of 13 she wrote her first poems in Faroese and Danish and made her public debut in 1958 in the magazine Oyggjaskeggi , then in 1961 in the literary magazine Varðin .
After attending school, she traveled to England and Iceland for a year and then returned to Copenhagen to train as a nurse and medical assistant . She also studied Scandinavian and Faroese philology at the University of the Faroe Islands .
In 1965 Guðrið Helmsdal married the Danish teacher and wood artist Ole Jakob Nielsen, with whom she has two children: the writer Rakel Helmsdal and Gudmund. The family has lived in the Faroe Islands since 1967. Today she lives in the village of Leynar .
In 1974 she received the Faroe Islands Literature Prize for Fiction for her two volumes of poetry from 1963 and 1971. Her poems have been translated into all Scandinavian languages and English.
In 2006, Stjørnuakrar - Sternenfelder also appeared in a book of poems in German with the Faroese and (partly) Danish original text next to it. The 18 poems were chosen by the author herself and the translation was done by the German teacher Anette Nielsen, who has lived in the Faroe Islands for 20 years. Because of its trilingualism, the book is also distributed in the Faroe Islands, especially since Guðrið Helmsdal's old Faroese editions have long been out of print and the volume also includes previously unpublished poems. To present the book in Germany, Guðrið Helmsdal held readings at the Danish embassy in Berlin and at the publishing house in Halle.
