Age of Greiggenschildt

Gualter von Greiggenschildt , also Gvalter or Walter von Greigenschild , (born May 1, 1622 in Wolgast , † February 18, 1697 in Greifswald ) was a lawyer and legal scholar of Scottish descent in Swedish Pomerania . His real name was Gualth Greigh, also Gualter Greigg or Walter Greigge.

Life

His father, Johan Greigh, was a merchant from Montrose , Scotland . His mother's name was Hedwig Fischer. After traveling to different countries, he was in 1654 at the University of Greifswald for licentiate of law doctorate . In the same year the Chancellor of the University Johan Oxenstierna appointed him associate professor. In addition, he continued to work as a lawyer. In 1655 he received his doctorate in law. Carl Gustav Wrangel appointed him general auditor of the Swedish army in Germany and director of the war consistory in Pomerania in 1659 . In 1669 he became assessor and in 1683 director of the Pomeranian court . On March 3, 1683 he was raised to the Swedish nobility with the name of Greiggenschildt . He died in Greifswald and was buried in the Nikolaikirche . His successor at the court was Franz Michael von Boltenstern .

He was married three times. He married his first wife Maria Margareta Hartmann (1639–1656) in 1654. She died after giving birth to twins in childbed. His second marriage was in 1658 with Anna Gerdes, the sister of the court president Friedrich Gerdes (1634–1696). The marriage had a son and a daughter. With his third wife, Ilsabe de Bruyn, he had five sons and five daughters. Several sons served in the Swedish military.
