Gualtherus Michael van Nieuwenhuizen († April 14, 1797 ) was the fifth Old Catholic Archbishop of Utrecht . His last name is also listed as van Nieuwenhuysen .

Live and act

He was elected Archbishop of Utrecht by the Chapter on November 19, 1767 and consecrated Bishop on February 7, 1768 by Johannes van Stiphout , Bishop of Haarlem .

A curious incident from this period can be found in the files of the Archbishop's Archives in Utrecht. In 1771 an alleged pastoral letter circulated from his predecessor Petrus Johannes Meindaerts concerning the beatification process of Juan de Palafox . This letter was dated December 15, 1770 - Meindaerts had died in 1767. So van Nieuwenhuizen and the bishops Bijeveld von Deventer and van Stiphout von Haarlem, together with a Mijnheer Meganck, had to publicize the forged pastoral letter and also to Popes Clement XIV and Pius VI. declare false to the opposite. A lengthy correspondence with the Roman Curia ensued about this , but it was never conducted directly and lasted until 1776.
