Petrus Johannes Meindaerts

Petrus Johannes Meindaerts (born November 7, 1684 in Groningen ; † October 31, 1767 ) was the fourth old Catholic Archbishop of Utrecht . His last name is also given as Meinarts .

Petrus Johannes Meindaerts studied in Mechelen and Leuven . He was one of several priests who in 1716 by Luke Fagan , Bishop of Meath and later Archbishop of Dublin , consecrated were. Meindaerts later became archpriest in Leeuwarden and dean of Friesland .

His election as Archbishop of Utrecht took place on July 2, 1739. On October 18, 1739 he was the last to be ordained bishop by Dominique Varlet . The Roman Curia was particularly angry that after Varlet's death (1742) he consecrated other bishops to ensure the apostolic succession of the Dutch Church, which was now independent from Rome . On September 2, 1742, he consecrated Hieronymus de Bock and, after his early death, on July 11, 1745, Johannes van Stiphout as Bishop of Haarlem . On January 25, 1758 he also consecrated Bartholomeus Johannes Bijeveld as Bishop of Deventer .

In 1763 he convened a regional synod in Utrecht , which took place there on September 13, 1763 and which was widely approved by the other Catholic bishops.

He wrote various scriptures for worship services.
