Gudench Barblan

Gudench Barblan (also first name Gaudenz common) (born January 24, 1860 in Vnà ; † October 5, 1916 in Scuol ) was a Lower Engadine teacher, publicist and collector of cultural assets such as the nicknames of the Engadine villages . He became known throughout Switzerland through the text of the Engadine hymn Chara lingua da la mamma .

life and work

He was the son of Jon Barblan and Anna, nee Thun . He attended elementary school in Ramosch in order to then complete the Matura at the Bündner Kantonsschule in Chur . From 1880 to 1898 Barblan worked as a teacher in the Lower Engadine, initially two years in Vnà, later in Ftan .

In 1886 he became a teacher in Sent at the newly founded first secondary school in the Lower Engadine.

Pedagogically, Barblan adhered to the ideas of Herbartianism . From 1898 to 1914 he worked at the Plantahof Agricultural School in Landquart . He promoted modern agricultural cultivation methods.

Barblan wrote numerous Engadine school books in Ladin and was active as a collector and editor of local literature.
