Guglielmo Sirleto

Guglielmo Sirleto (* 1514 in Guardavalle in Calabria , † October 6, 1585 in Rome ) was a cardinal of the Roman Church .

He was a member of the Roman Curia and became Bishop of San Marco Argentano , and later of Squillace . He was appointed cardinal on March 12, 1565 by Pope Pius IV . He was involved in the preparation of the Roman Catechism , as well as the Roman Breviary and Missal . He was responsible for working out a new Roman martyrology . He was also chairman of the Commission for Calendar Reform under Gregory XIII.

In 1554 he was appointed curator of the Vatican Library. In 1572 he became cardinal librarian and in 1573 a member of the newly founded Reform Congregation for the Greeks. On November 1, 1579, Gregory XIII appointed him. with the bull Benedictus Dominus as protector of the newly formed Basilian Congregation, which had held its first general chapter on Pentecost 1579 by order of Sirleto.

His tomb is in the church of San Bernardino da Siena .
