Guido von Ibelin (Constable of Cyprus)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Guido von Ibelin (French: Guy d'Ibelin ; † after May 1255 ) from the House of Ibelin was marshal , later constable of the Kingdom of Cyprus .

He was a younger son of Johann von Ibelin , the "old gentleman of Beirut", and the Melisende of Arsuf. His father was a powerful baron from the Kingdom of Jerusalem and ruler of Cyprus since 1227. In 1228 Johann was deposed by the Roman-German Emperor Friedrich II , who himself claimed rule over Cyprus. Johann then led the armed resistance ( Lombard War ) against the emperor's claims to power in Outremer .

At a young age Guido fought on June 15, 1232 in the victorious battle of Agridi against the troops of the imperial governor Richard Filangieri , in which an invasion of Cyprus could be prevented. Later, in 1248 at the latest, he was appointed Marshal of Cyprus by King Henry I.

Together with his brother, Seneschall Balduin von Ibelin , Guido led the Cypriot knighthood from 1249 on the crusade of Louis IX. from France to Egypt ( Sixth Crusade ). There, however, both were captured by the Mamluks in April 1250 . During their captivity, the Mamluks in Egypt carried out a coup d'état on May 1, 1250, and murdered Sultan Turan Shah . The Mamluks released the prisoners a few days later for a ransom.

After Guido had returned to Cyprus, he was in 1250 by the king for constable ( constable appointed).
