Guilderland is a hamlet in the Town of Guilderland in Albany County , New York in the United States .
history
The hamlet of Guilderland was built around a glassworks known as the Glass House in 1792 . The factory was in the middle of the Pine Bush , an area then known as Dowesburgh. In 1796, with the expectation that a factory settlement would emerge, streets and parcels were measured and 54 houses were built for workers in the glassworks. This small settlement was named Hamilton after the Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton , who was from Albany and was one of the founding fathers of the United States. When the Great Western Turnpike was built through the hamlet in 1799 to connect Albany with the western border, inns and other businesses opened up in Hamilton to serve the pioneers. The glass factory closed in 1815, which sealed the end of the settlement as an industrial site. The first post office was built in 1815 , but it was named Guilderland , even though the town was known as Sloan's by locals because Sloan owned a large local hotel. The name Hamilton lives on in the name of the Presbyterian community, the Hamilton Union Presbyterian Church, founded in 1824.

As a hamlet, Guilderland has no clearly defined boundary lines, but Guilderland extends north of US Highway 20 ( Western Avenue ) between New York State Route 155 ( State Farm Road / New Karner Road ) and the southern section of New York State Route 146 in Direction Altamont .
