Life

Guillaume Grivel studied law and started a career as a lawyer in Bordeaux . But he soon gave up and turned to Paris to work primarily as a writer. Although his writings mostly left the legal field, they often pursued goals that are of particular importance in practical life. A pleasing style is also praised in them. After the founding of the central schools in Paris, Grivel became a professor of legislation there. He was a member of the academies of La Rochelle , Dijon and Rouen as well as the Philosophical Society of Philadelphia . He died in Paris in 1810 at the age of 75.

Grivel wrote, among other things:

  • L'ami des jeunes gens (2 volumes, Lille 1764–66), an educational book
  • Nouvelle bibliothèque de littérature, d'histoire et de critique, ou choix des meilleurs morceaux tirés des Ana (2 volumes, Lille and Paris 1765): A strange harvest of flowers from Thuanus , Valesius, Scaliger, Huet, Varillas and others, passages from their works, strung together without any internal connection.
  • Théorie de l'éducation (3 volumes, Paris 1776 and 1783); a German translation appeared in Breslau as early as 1777
  • L'île inconnue ou Mémoires du chevalier de Gastines, contenant l'histoire de la formation et de la civilization de la société (6 volumes, 1783–87). Several editions soon appeared, including a German translation. La Harpe judged that the adventures presented by the author in this novel were written in an exciting manner and that the principles on which they were based were not badly chosen; the style is also careless, but informal and natural.
  • Principes de politique, de finances, d'agriculture, de législation, et autres branches d'administration (2 volumes, Paris 1789)
  • Analysis synoptique du cours de législation du citoyen Grivel , published in 1802 by A. Lorin

In addition, Grivel edited in the Encyclopédie méthodique part of the articles on the state and national economy . He also published with additions: the Nouvelle école du monde by De Bret (Paris 1764; he himself wrote the preface and, in the second part, the overview of beautiful literature ) and the Entretiens d'un jeune prince avec son gouverneur par LDH (4 volumes, Paris 1785). According to Michaud ( Biographie universelle , 2nd edition 1843-65, Vol. 17, p. 574), the LDH means L'ami Des Hommes , which means the Marquis of Mirabeau.
