Guillaume Mirabel

Guillaume Mirabel (born August 29, 1744 in Fitou , Département Aude , † August 13, 1794 near Sant Llorenç de la Muga , Catalonia ) was a French general of the cavalry .

Live and act

At the age of 24, Mirabel entered the army on April 11, 1768 and resigned from service after four years. After various activities as a worker and employee, he got a job as a weighing foreman at the customs authority in Agde ( Département Hérault ) with effect from October 1, 1780 .

During the revolution , Mirabel soon became a supporter of Napoleon Bonaparte and returned to the army. During the reign of terror he came on May 12, 1793 with the rank of lieutenant as a cavalry instructor and barely seven weeks he was promoted to captain and transferred to the Armée des Pyrénées Orientales .

He was able to distinguish himself through bravery in the coalition wars, but was also wounded several times. With effect from December 23, 1793 Mirabel was promoted to général de brigade and came to the staff of General Jacques François Dugommier . Under his command he also fought in Spain .

Mirabel was fatally wounded in the battle of Sant Llorenç de la Muga (August 13, 1794). The next morning he was buried on the edge of the battlefield under a freedom tree - which had been specially erected for it.
