Guillermo García Costa

Guillermo García Costa (born June 10, 1930 in Montevideo , † October 11, 2014 ) was a Uruguayan politician.

García Costa was a lawyer by profession. He belonged to the Partido Nacional . From 1964 to 1967 he worked under the then Minister Wilson Ferreira Aldunate , with whom he was involved in the founding of the Movimiento por la Patria in 1969 , as State Secretary in the Uruguayan Ministry of Agriculture. In the elections in 1966 and 1971 he was elected to the Cámara de Representantes . At the beginning of the 1980s, he played a not insignificant role within his party in efforts to restore democracy during the civil-military dictatorship ruling in Uruguay. In 1984 he acquired a mandate as a senator in the Cámara de Senadores . In the elections in Uruguay in 1989 , he was on the team with Alberto Zumarán, vice-presidential candidate. However, they were defeated by the eventual winner Luis Alberto Lacalle . On March 1, 1990, he took over the management of the Uruguayan Ministry of Education and Culture. He carried out this task until August 12, 1992. From that day until March 1, 1995, he held the office of Uruguayan Minister of Health . In 1997 he moved to the Senate for the departed Ignacio de Posadas . In 1999 the voters confirmed this mandate for the following legislative period. He died on October 11, 2014 at the age of 84.
