Goulash programming night
The Goulash Programming Night ( GPN for short ) is a four-day conference for hackers, technology enthusiasts and interested laypeople and with over 1000 participants the second largest annual event of the Chaos Computer Club (CCC) after the Chaos Communication Congress . The GPN is organized once a year by Entropia e. V., the Karlsruhe branch of the CCC. The wide-ranging program includes specialist lectures, panel discussions and workshops on topics such as hardware and software development, IT security, open source and free software as well as data protection and network policy. In contrast to other comparable community events on the hacker scene, entry to the GPN is free. The event is financed without advertising and exclusively from donations. Since the first GPN in 2002, the event has grown steadily. In 2019, more than 1500 people last took part in the goulash programming night.
procedure
The GPN is open continuously for four days from the opening and is used by many visitors for the entire period. It is divided into two areas:
The lecture program is announced in the respective "timetable" and includes both demanding specialist lectures and beginner-friendly or humorous contributions, as well as workshops, show contributions and panel discussions on technical, political and social topics.
In addition to the lecture program, the GPN in the hack center and the adjoining rooms offers space for participants' own projects and activities. Infrastructure in the form of power supply, fast network access and an internal DECT telephone network is provided. Bringing their own hardware, the presentation of current projects and spontaneous activities by the participants form an integral part of the program and are expressly desired.
history
The first goulash programming night took place in the basement of the industrial estate in Karlsruhe . After the still young Entropia e. V. threatened to get into financial difficulties, the members organized the first goulash programming night between April 12 and 14, 2002. The name of the event should be taken literally: During these three days, several dozen young people programmed and ate goulash mainly at night .
In 2010, goulash programming nights 9 and 10 took place due to a planning error. Since the planned premises were not available on the planned date, the goulash programming night 9 was celebrated in a small group, while the goulash programming night 10 took place a few weeks later at the originally planned location, the HfG Karlsruhe .
Since 2009 the GPN has been taking place on the premises of the HfG Karlsruhe. The rooms of the neighboring ZKM Karlsruhe have also been used since 2014 . In 2017, for the first time, over 1000 visitors were present at the same time.
The supporters of the series of events include media artists and theorists Peter Weibel , Siegfried Zielinski and Michael Bielicky, who work at the ZKM and the HfG . As hosts of the goulash programming night, they enabled it to develop into an integral part of the German-speaking hacker culture .

particularities
The GPN is one of the largest community events for the hacker scene in Europe with free entry. In German-speaking countries, the GPN is the second largest annual CCC event after the Chaos Communication Congress . The event is mainly supported by donations from the participants and is completely free of advertising. Most of the organizational work is done by volunteers, called trolls at the GPN .
The free admission and the flow of visitors to the adjacent museums of the ZKM automatically result in a mixture of hackers , coders , artists and interested citizens. The Swiss multimedia artist and author Alex Wenger - known in the scene under the pseudonym Blueloop - exemplifies the intermingling of these areas during the goulash programming night: not only as a visitor, but also as part of the event, gave lectures again and again from the second to the sixth goulash programming night on topics such as digital radio or how LCDs work . It is this lack of separation between lecturers, visitors to the event, students of the university and visitors to the museums that, by mixing different and yet related topics, make the event what the organizers intend: every visitor is a guest, participant and source of inspiration at the same time. The goulash programming night offers everyone a platform to exchange ideas on the topics mentioned.
