The Gunnerales are a small order within the flowering plants (Magnoliopsida). It comprises two morphologically very different families that have no externally visible common characteristics. While the Gunneraceae are gigantic mesophytic herbaceous plants , the Myrothamnaceae are woody, humid resurrection plants of arid areas.
Systematics
The Gunnerales are the most basic group of the kernel eudicotyledons and thus the sister group of all other kernel eudicotyledons.
The order comprises two families, each of which comprises only one genus, i.e. is monogeneric:
- Gunneraceae: With the only genus:
- Gunnera L .: with 40 to 50 species.
- Myrothamnaceae: With the only genus:
- Myrothamnus Welw. ( Syn . : Myosurandra Baill. ). There are only two species in Africa and Madagascar . They are small shrubs with alternate leaves.
