Gunnison is a place in Sanpete County in the US state of Utah .
geography
The site covers an area of 13.7 km² (5.3 mi²).
history
The city was named after the explorer John Williams Gunnison . The place was first settled in 1859 and was then still called "Chalk Point". A first attempt at settlement a little west of the current location of the place had previously failed because the area selected at the time was threatened by flooding in spring. The place was named after the government commissioner John W. Gunnison, who died in 1853 together with six companions in a collision with Indians from the Paiute tribe ; however, this incident occurred in Millard County , not Sanpete County. Gunnison was officially registered as a town in 1893 .
