Gunther Schmidt (basketball coach)

Gunther Schmidt (born October 19, 1935 ) is a German basketball trainer and official.

career

Schmidt worked as a basketball trainer in Dresden until 1965 and from then on in Halle an der Saale . Between 1968 and 1990 he led the women of SG KPV 69 Halle (until 1969 SC Chemie Halle) to 22 GDR championship titles. In 1969 he led the KPV women to the final of the European Cup, where they lost to Riga. From 1969 to 1971 and from 1972 to 1990 he also coached the women's national team of the GDR and from 1958 to 1958 also the female GDR junior team. He is credited with having a decisive influence on basketball in the city of Halle and, in particular, on promoting talent there. He was referred to as the "mentor of basketball in Saxony-Anhalt and Central Germany".

Schmidt set up the “Central Germany Basketball Archive”, which can be accessed on the Internet, in which, among other things, he compiled and prepared numerous data and facts about basketball in the German Democratic Republic .

For more than 60 years in basketball, he has worked as a player, coach, club and association official. In December 2018 Schmidt was awarded the gold medal of honor from the Basketball Association of Saxony-Anhalt .
