Gurgen Adamjan

Gurgen Levonowitsch Adamjan ( Armenian Գուրգեն Ադամյան , Russian Гурген Левонович Адамян ; born December 7 . Jul / 20th December  1911 greg. In Odessa , † 28 September 1987 in Yerevan , Armenian SSR , Soviet Union ) was a Soviet cellist, composer and music teacher of Armenian origin.

life and work

Gurgen Adamjan studied cello in the class of LJ Edelman at the Yerevan Conservatory and graduated in 1931. From 1932 to 1937 he studied at the Moscow Conservatory with the cellist Semjon Kosolupow (1884–1961). A postgraduate , he completed afterwards in the quartet class of Yevgeny Mikhailovich Gusikow. From 1939 he taught cello at the conservatory in Yerevan and soon led a chamber music class there. In 1942 he became a lecturer and from 1972 a professor . He has given concerts as a soloist in the Soviet Union and abroad and was a cellist in the string quartet of Aleksandr Spendiarjan . In 1961 he wrote his first cello concerto. He made chamber music with famous musicians such as Svyatoslaw Richter , Emil Gilels and David Ostrach . In 1967 he wrote a suite for violoncello, double bass, piano and percussion. In 1968 Adamjan received the honorary title of People's Artist of the Armenian SSR . In 1970 he published his second cello concerto.

He also wrote works for violoncello and piano, including an Artaschatic dance in 1950, the piece Shiraki in 1952, the pieces Лирическая песня [lyric song], Воспоминание [memory] and Весенняя [spring] in 1956, a Canzonetta in 1956, 1965 a Concertino and in 1973 a соната-поэма [Sonata poema] and in 1980 Праздничная [Festive]. He also wrote various dance pieces and miniatures. For string quartets he wrote Танец Арагац [dance Aragat ] and in 1979 Эскимосские напевы [Eskimo melodies]. Folk song arrangements and transcriptions of various compositions by various composers for cello and piano and various chamber music ensembles come from his pen. So some collections of different pieces for cello lessons appeared.

Recordings

On the LP Gurgen Adamyan - Music for Violoncello , various pieces he composed were published on the Melodjia label in 1961 . With the pianist Marianna Aruntjunjan he played the Assatic Dance from 1951, Wesennjaja Spring from 1955 and the Youth March . ( OCLC 1048460726 )
