The Gustav Kögel memorial is located in the Pressel district of the municipality of Laußig ( Northern Saxony district ) in the Dübener Heide nature park . The listed monument can be found here near the Presseler Castle and honors the globetrotter Friedrich Gustav Kögel (1860–1947).

Description and history

The Gustav Kögel monument honors and commemorates the globetrotter Friedrich Gustav Kögel (1860–1947) who was born in Pressel . Kögel is to due to a with Fred Thorner newspaper concluded bet 10,000 dollars the first man from 1894 to 1896 the globe have circumnavigated on foot. She was preceded by another bet that Kögel had won a year earlier with the 192-day record he had set for the walk from New York to San Francisco . Gustav Kögel later met the adventure writer Karl May , who dedicated a poem to him after the encounter and later mentioned the encounter with Kögel in his diary entries . The bet was ultimately lost because the trip did not cross Siberia as agreed . The public paid tribute to both hikers with worldwide coverage and respect for their achievements.

The monument was inaugurated on October 6, 1996 on the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of the circumnavigation of the world. The Gustav Kögel memorial stone is a roughly hewn granite stele on a granite plinth. A copper plate with the portrait of Gustav Kögel is attached to the front of the stone . Furthermore, on it are his name, his life data and the inscription: "From Pressel was the first person to walk around our globe from 1894-1896".

The area around the memorial stone was laid out with granite stones and planted.

The Gustav Kögel hiking trail that begins at the memorial is another honor in the birthplace of Kögels. The six-kilometer circular route leads past the birth house of the adventurer and various places of interest in the village and its immediate vicinity. The 19 different stations on the trail, marked with boulders and wooden boards, were given the names of cities that Gustav Kögel visited on his journey around the world.
