Gustav Abel (film architect)
Gustav Abel (born January 25, 1902 in Vienna ; † June 2, 1963 there ) was an Austrian film architect and set designer . He created buildings for a total of 226 film productions.
Abel initially studied from 1917 to 1922 at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna under Josef Hoffmann , Oskar Strnad and Carl Witzmann . He then worked for several years as an equipment assistant in Vienna , Berlin and Prague . In 1937 he moved to Rome and joined the Scalera film production company . By 1943 he was involved as a film architect in 22 major productions, including Tosca , Kapitän Tempesta and Die Glasbrücke . He also directed the feature film The Rainbow .
In 1944 he returned to Vienna and until 1955 took on a teaching position for the subject of film imaging at the Academy of Fine Arts . At the same time, the buildings for a further series of Austrian feature films were built, such as Verlorenes Rennen (1948), Fairy Tales of Luck (1949), The Fourth Commandment (1950), The Peasant Rebel (1953) and The Sputtering (1953).
