Saint Jakobi Church

The Sankt-Jakobi-Kirche is a Protestant church in the old town of Schönebeck (Elbe) in Saxony-Anhalt .

architecture

The three-aisled early Gothic basilica was built in the early 13th century with quarry stones from Plötzky and was changed several times afterwards. Originally a building with a flat roof, the two square towers on the west side were added a few years later. From the second half of the 13th century, the sound arcades with pointed arches have been preserved. The baroque double hoods with lanterns date from 1735, the neo-Gothic west portal was installed in 1840. The choir is rectangular and identical in width to the nave. Major alterations to the church took place in the 18th century and in 1884/85. In the 18th century, the aisles were raised to enable a uniform monopitch roof . In 1885 there was another conversion to the original basic roof shape.

Nave

While the windows in the side aisles were structurally changed, the windows in the eastern wall of the choir remained in their original form. The same is likely to apply to the ogival cliff windows .

Furnishing

Due to a flood in 1876, Elbe water penetrated the interior of the church and destroyed a large part of the old furnishings, so that little of it has been preserved. These include the carved figures "Katharina" and "Maria with child", which were created around 1470. A weathered font from the 17th century has also been preserved. In addition to reliefs, it also shows coats of arms and scrollwork . The destruction meant that the interior of the church had to be almost completely renewed. In the course of the renovation work, St. Jakobi received its current appearance.

The interior has a flat ceiling and through five high and arched designed, resting on smooth pillars arcades dominated that been restored in 1884/85.

Choir

In the last few years it has been possible to renovate the dilapidated church towers through subsidies and private donations. Therefore, the church could not be used for permanent worship for a long time. Therefore, those responsible decided in the 1990s to build a new community hall in their immediate vicinity. The building, which has now been completed, is adorned with the controversial wall hangings by the artist Christof Grüger, who lives in Schönebeck .
