Gustav Adolf Scheidt

Gustav Adolf Scheidt (* 1827 in Ronsdorf (today: Wuppertal ), † October 2, 1908 ) was an entrepreneur , founder and honorary citizen of the city of Ronsdorf.

biography

Gustav Adolf Scheidt grew up in Ronsdorf and married Hermine Göbel at a young age. Soon after, he emigrated to the United States , where he became a representative of the Baden aniniline and soda factories . At the same time he sold the products of the Ronsdorf bandmakers . As a millionaire he returned to Germany and settled in Düsseldorf . From 1884 to 1885 he served there as Consul of the United States. As a well-funded pensioner, he lived in the so-called “Villa New York” at the beginning of Ratinger Strasse , at the corner of Alleestrasse . He kept exotic animals on his property in the middle of the old town .

As early as 1860 he promoted the Ronsdorf gymnastics community and was made an honorary member. In 1896 he bought a piece of land in his native town of Ronsdorf on today 's Scheidtstrasse , which is named after him, for 8,960 marks , donated it to the city and donated a gym and a playground there for 20,700 marks . He donated another 50,000 marks for the holiday games for Ronsdorf elementary school students . For these donations, the city council of Ronsdorf awarded him honorary citizenship on July 15, 1897.

In 1905 Scheidt made it possible for the city of Düsseldorf to take over shares in the Düsseldorf zoo with a gift of 500,000 gold marks and wished to continue it under the name of the Düsseldorf Zoological Garden, Scheidt Keim Foundation .
