Gustav Eilers

Gustav Eilers (born July 28, 1834 in Königsberg i. Pr. , † January 27, 1911 in Berlin ) was a German engraver , etcher and painter .

Life

Eilers first studied at the Königsberg Art Academy with Robert Trossin . After completing his training , he engraved the portrait of the academy director Ludwig Rosenfelder . In Berlin since 1863, he was involved in the large and small edition of the engravings after Wilhelm Kaulbach's wall paintings. In 1869 he founded his own studio in Berlin. On January 26, 1883, he was elected a member of the Royal Academy of Arts in Berlin , where he was awarded the title of professor on February 25, 1885. In 1885 he founded the Association for Original Etching in Berlin . He was a member of the hanging commission and the jury of the Great Academic Art Exhibition and was active as a reviewer. He was also a member of the Berlin Artists Association .

Eilers achieved a significant level of artistic empathy in the rendering of masterpieces , for example the interest groschen by Tizian and the merchant Giese by Hans Holbein the Younger . The Saint Cäcilie by Peter Paul Rubens was his main work.
