Gustav Hermann Krumbiegel (born December 18, 1865 in Lohmen ; † February 8, 1956 in Bangalore , Karnataka ) was a German botanist and garden architect who was best known as the director of the Lal Bagh Botanical Gardens in Bangalore.

Live and act

After completing school in Wilsdruff and Dresden , Krumbiegel completed an apprenticeship in horticulture in Pillnitz . In 1884 he worked in the administration for fruit and horticulture in Schwerin . From 1885 to 1887 he worked as a landscape gardener in Hamburg. In 1888 Krumbiegel moved to England, where he initially designed flower beds in Hyde Park and from 1890 to 1893 worked at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew . He also took courses at the South Kensington School , where he was awarded prizes and certificates for geometry and perspective drawing. In 1893 Krumbiegel became curator at the Government Botanical Gardens, Ooty, where he was responsible for the architectural redesign and had fountains, bridges and pavilions built.

In 1896 Krumbiegel married Kate Evans from England. From 1908 to 1932 Krumbiegel was chief gardener and director of the Lal Bagh Botanical Gardens in Bangalore with the exception of the years of World War I , during which he was interned in an Indian camp . With the design of the botanical gardens and the creation of avenues , he significantly promoted Bangalore's reputation as a garden city.

On the occasion of the 150th birthday a special exhibition "The gardener of the Maharajas. A Saxon enchants India" took place in the New Palace and in the Park of Pillnitz in 2016.
