Life

Heyer was the eldest son of the professor of forest science at the Ludwig University Carl Heyer (1797-1856). He graduated from the Landgraf-Ludwigs-Gymnasium and studied forest sciences at the local university. There Heyer received his doctorate in 1847 as Dr. phil. and completed his habilitation in 1849 as a private lecturer in forest science at the University of Giessen.

In addition to his teaching post, he managed the Gießen chief forester from 1854 to 1857 . In 1857 he was promoted to full professor. On March 7, 1868, Heyer was appointed director of the newly founded Royal Prussian Forest Academy in Hann. Münden.

In 1872 he was given the character of a Privy Councilor .

In 1878, Heyer took up the full professorship for management (forest yield regulation with practical examples, forest value calculation and forest statics) and taught as a professor of forest science at the University of Munich .

On July 10, 1883, he never returned home from a fishing trip. His body was only discovered in the water near Emmering on July 14th . A medical report stated that he must have had a heart attack in the cold water while barefoot while trying to loosen the fishing line. The funeral took place on July 15th at the Old Northern Cemetery in Munich with great participation . After this cemetery was closed, his tomb with the portrait bust designed by Thomas Dennerlein was moved to the old cemetery in Gießen in 1913 .
