Gustav Ferdinand Heyse (born March 26, 1809 in Nordhausen , † April 4, 1883 in Aschersleben ) was a German philologist , numismatist , regional historian and collector of autographs .

Life

Gustav Heyse was the youngest son of Johann Christian August Heyse , at that time already a well-known dictionary author and rector of the grammar school and director of the secondary school for girls in Nordhausen. Heyse first attended high school in Nordhausen, then the trade and business school in Magdeburg . In 1823 he left school and began training in the mining industry, which took him to Ilsenburg , Clausthal-Zellerfeld , Göttingen and Berlin . This was followed by a six-month educational trip through Saxony, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Bavaria and a study visit to the Silesian mines and metallurgical plants.

From 1836 to 1868 he worked in Aschersleben as a teacher of mathematics and natural sciences at the high school.

The unmarried and childless Heyse continued his father's foreign dictionary, wrote the Heysesche family chronicle, collected coins, mining brands, fossils, autographs and literature about the Harz Mountains . His history of Brockenreisen is still considered a standard work today.
