Gustav Ising (different spelling: Gustaf Ising ; born February 19, 1883 in Finja ; † February 5, 1960 in Danderyd ) was a Swedish particle physicist and geophysicist .

Ising received his first degree in filosofie kandidat ( Bachelor ) from Uppsala University in 1903 and continued his studies at Stockholm University. There he earned his doctorate in 1919 with a dissertation entitled Undersökningar rörande elektrometrar ("Investigations regarding electrometers "). In 1934 he became a professor.

He is known for inventing a concept for a linear accelerator in 1924, which is the forerunner of all modern accelerators based on oscillating electromagnetic fields . His publication was taken up by Rolf Wideröe and put into practice, which also set in motion the development of circular particle accelerators such as the cyclotron and the betatron .

He was elected to the Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1935 , and was a member of the Nobel Prize Committee for Physics from 1947 to 1953 , along with former Nobel Prize winners and chairmen Manne Siegbahn and Svante Arrhenius , with Erik Hulthén , Axel Edvin Lindh , Ivar Waller , and Carl Borelius .
