Gustav Korff

Gustav Korff (born May 31, 1872 in Karlshafen , † July 1, 1934 in Munich ) was a German phytopathologist.

Life

Gustav Korff completed an apprenticeship as a pharmacist at the court pharmacy in Kassel from 1889 to 1892. He then worked as a pharmacist's assistant in Kassel, Berlin and Leipzig. In 1895 he went to the University of Erlangen to study natural sciences and became a member of the Corps Guestphalia Erlangen. In 1897 he obtained his pharmacist license. In the following year he received a doctorate from Maximilian Reeß with a dissertation in fermentation physiology. phil. PhD. Until 1904 Korff remained as an assistant at the Reeß Botanical Institute in Erlangen, where he worked on bacteriological, geological and zoological topics. In 1903 he passed the exams to become a food chemist. In 1904 he moved to the Agricultural Botanical Institute in Munich, which later became the Bavarian State Institute for Plant Cultivation and Plant Protection. In 1920 he became head of the plant protection department. At the Technical University of Munich he read about diseases of agricultural crops and practical plant protection . In 1920 he received the title of professor and in 1929 he was appointed honorary professor.

Korff was the first German state to establish a plant protection monitoring and advisory service for farmers and gardeners in Bavaria. He also introduced plant inspection in Bavaria for import and export control of plants and plant products. He also worked on nutritional and pathological topics in vegetable and fruit growing as well as in the cultivation of special crops.
