Gustav Maran , actually Gustav Dolezal (born January 8, 1854 in Vienna , † May 19, 1917 in Sulz , Lower Austria ) was an Austrian theater actor and comedian .

Life

Maran, the son of an accountant, first graduated from a private trade school. He then worked for a year and a half in the offices of various wholesalers. In 1871 he took acting lessons from Emilie Door . After just 14 days, he had his first appearance in a lover's role. After half a year he switched to Eduard Kirschner's theater academy . He also received lessons from Carl Adolf Friese . In 1873 he received his first engagement at the newly opened Vienna Residenztheater. In 1874 his wandering life began, which took him to the smallest theaters in Styria, Hungary and Transylvania. In 1880 he was hired at the theater in Chernivtsi, through an agent's mistake as an intriguer, while a colleague was hired as a comedian. After he was almost laughed off the stage in a serious role, his colleague in the comic roles could hardly win a smile from the audience. The role compartment was then swapped. In 1881 he went to Oldenburg, 1882 Krems, followed by Linz, Ischl, again Linz, Salzburg and Baden near Vienna (1889–1890). There he celebrated success as a replacement for the sick actor Felix Schweighofer . He then played in Preßburg, Reichenberg and Karlsbad before he made his debut on September 28, 1894 at the newly opened theater in der Josefstadt as "School Inspector Blanchard" in "Tata-Toto". He stayed there until his death in 1917.

He also had two appearances as a film actor in 1914 and 1916.

In Vienna- Donaustadt , Marangasse has been named after him since 1955 .

His honorary grave is in the Hietzinger Friedhof in Vienna (group 40, number 8 B).
