Gustav Paumgartner (born November 23, 1933 in Neumarkt in Styria ) is an Austrian gastroenterologist .

Life

After studying medicine at the Universities of Princeton , Graz and Vienna , Gustav Paumgartner received his doctorate in 1960 . He then worked for two years at the Pharmacological Institute of the University of Vienna, then assistant doctor at the II. Medical University Clinic Vienna; This activity he interrupted 1965-1966 for a stay in the United States as a Fellow in Medicine of the New Jersey College of Medicine , where he also practiced at the Jersey City Medical Center .

From Vienna he moved to Switzerland to the Institute for Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Bern . There he completed his habilitation, became associate professor and deputy institute director.

From 1979 until his retirement in 1999, Gustav Paumgartner was full professor for internal medicine at the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich (LMU). There he was also director of the Medical Clinic II at the Großhadern Clinic . Even after his retirement, he served at LMU as head of the ethics committee of the medical faculty until 2010 . In 2013, the Medical University of Vienna appointed him visiting professor at the Clinical Department for Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University Clinic for Internal Medicine III.

One focus of Gustav Paumgartner's research work was the area of bile secretion , bile acid metabolism and cholestasis . He researched the mechanism of the uptake of bile acids in the liver and described the mode of action of ursodeoxycholic acid in the treatment of chronic cholestatic diseases of the liver. Another focus of his work was the development and treatment of gallstones . Paumgartner introduced extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy into therapy and combined it with litholysis using ursodeoxycholic acid. Paumgartner also worked in the field of portal hypertension in cirrhosis of the liver and the treatment of esophageal variceal bleeding .

Honors, awards and memberships

In 1992 Gustav Paumgartner was chairman of the 47th meeting of the German Society for Gastroenterology, Digestive and Metabolic Diseases (DGVS). In 2003 he was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art . In April 2017, the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) recognized him for his life's work in the research of liver diseases with its Award of Recognition . On October 10, 2018, the Medical University of Graz awarded him an honorary doctorate .
