Gustav Wilhelm Richard Sorge (born April 6, 1852 in Wettin , † December 1, 1907 in Lankwitz ) was a German technologist.

Life

As the son of a surgeon who practiced in Schilda , he specialized in the field of coal mining in Wettin . He carefully examined the mining conditions including the conveyor technology . He took further details from the library of the Wettin Mining Authority.

Since he had come to the conviction that the prospects for coal mining at the Wettin coal mine were not good, he switched to the field of oil production and acquired the necessary knowledge during a stay of several years in the USA.

From there he traveled to the oil fields near Baku in 1877 to set up a workshop for drilling technology for the Otto Lenz machine factory in Sabuntschi , concentrating on the field of deep drilling technology and the industrial systems required for it. In 1881 he founded his own company under his name. This subsequently worked not only for the Deutsche Petroleum-Aktiengesellschaft (DPAG), but also for the Caucasian oil company of the noble company .

For the Kasbek Syndicate in Grozny , he accepted orders for the Kuzmin and Malyavkin oil fields. He worked for the Romanian company Steaua Română on the Câmpina oil field in Romania . Over the years he had developed into a recognized specialist in the three types of conveying technology in the oil industry: pumping, scooping and compressed air operation. He also published some papers and lectured at international meetings of engineers for drilling techniques.

The widowed Sorge married Nina Semjonovna Kobelewa, who was born in Baku on April 20, 1867 in a working-class family, and became the father of Richard Sorge (1895–1944).

Since his health had deteriorated, the family moved to Berlin-Lankwitz in 1898; there he worked as a director for the Disconto-Gesellschaft , which had founded the German-Russian Naphta-Gesellschaft . In 1900 he prepared a report on the Romanian oil industry for them.
