Gustav von Leonhardt (born January 8, 1838 in Graz , † April 7, 1891 in Vienna ) was an Austrian banking specialist and general secretary of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank .

Life

He was the son of Andreas Leonhardt (1800–1866). Gustav Leonhardt was after an apprenticeship at the upper secondary school and the Geyer'sche commercial school Comptoirist at Carl Kanitz. In 1857 he joined the “privileged Austrian National Bank”. He was an employee of Wilhelm von Lucam (1820–1900). In 1867 he founded the Compass publishing house . In 1869 he was appointed assistant secretary and in 1870 secretary of the bank. In 1872 he founded the economic journal Der Tresor as a supplement to Compass, which was published until 1919. His dual role - on the one hand the managerial position in the bank and on the other hand the ownership and editing of two economic periodicals that obtained statistical data from the bank - was discussed by the press at the time. The conflict of interest culminated in a declaration of honor by Leonhardt in 1874. A few weeks later he gave up the management of the vault. In 1878 he withdrew completely. In the same year he became General Secretary of the newly founded Austro-Hungarian Bank and successfully carried out the restructuring of the National Bank that was necessary due to the transition to a dualistic monarchy. He decentralized the banking business in the Habsburg Monarchy and divided the area into 40 districts, with each district receiving a branch and subsidiary branches. Leonhardt was a representative of the expansion of the central bank's credit policy. In 1880 he withdrew entirely from the Compass. In 1888 he was awarded the Leopold Order on account of his services , which entitled him to bear the title of nobility "Knight of Leonhardt". Gustav von Leonhardt wrote several books on monetary policy.

He had four children with his wife Valerie Deutsch (1842–1901) from Iglau . Hugo von Leonhardt (1862–1916) was the financial district director in Korneuburg . Fritz von Leonhardt (1868–?) Worked in the London branch of Deutsche Bank AG . Like his father, he too published on monetary policy. Other common children were Andolf (1864–1871) and Hedwig (1867–1896).

Gustav von Leonhardt's grave is located at the Matzleinsdorf Evangelical Cemetery .
