Andreas Leonhardt

Andreas Leonhardt (born April 19, 1800 in Asch , Bohemia; † October 3, 1866 in Vienna ) was an Austrian musician, composer and conductor. He made a contribution to the reorganization of military music in the Austrian Empire.

Life

Andreas Leonhardt was the son of a cloth merchant. After his musical training in Eger , Leonhard joined the band of the infantry regiment "Kaiser Alexander" in Vienna in 1818. In his spare time he studies music. He was transferred to Naples with the regiment in 1820 . There he also took lessons from Niccolò Antonio Zingarelli , director of the Conservatory and Kapellmeister at the Cathedral of Naples .

When the regiment was moved to Prague, he remained a member of the regimental music and studied composition with Wenzel Johann Tomaschek . He successfully applied for the vacant position of regimental bandmaster with the kuk 27th Infantry Regiment, which was moved to Bologna in 1829 . With the 27th Infantry Regiment he returned to Graz in 1835 , where he resigned from the army and took over the position of director of the music club for Styria. When in 1850 he was offered the job of the kuk Army Kapellmeister, he went to Vienna and earned services for the reorganization of the kuk military music system and the founding of the Military Kapellmeister Pension Association. In addition, he composed works for symphony orchestra and military music.

His son was Gustav von Leonhardt (1838–1891), General Secretary of the Austrian National Bank.
