Gustav von Vaerst (veterinarian)

Gustav von Vaerst (born September 15, 1858 in Wengern b. Wetter; † April 1, 1922 in Meiningen ( Thuringia )) was a German state veterinarian and professor of veterinary medicine.

Life

He came from an old noble family in Westphalia . His father was a landowner in Wengern (southern Ruhr area). After attending elementary school, v. Vaerst to the Realgymnasium in Witten ad Ruhr and passed the Abitur examination in 1877. Then he studied at the Königl. University of Veterinary Medicine Berlin (later Faculty of Humboldt University Berlin ) and was licensed as a veterinarian in 1881 . This was followed by a year of work for a district veterinarian. V. Vaerst assistant to privy councilor Wilhelm Esser , professor of veterinary pathology at the University of Göttingen 's Institute of Veterinary Medicine , and from 1884 to 1887 prosector and tutor for anatomy and physiology at the University of Veterinary Medicine, Hanover . In 1885 he presented in Berlin the exam as a veterinary officer and received his doctorate in 1886 at the University of Erlangen Dr. phil.

In the spring of 1887, v. Vaerst was appointed district veterinarian in Erfurt and in the autumn of the same year as regional veterinarian and medical assessor in Meiningen. In addition to working as an official veterinarian for the territory of the Duchy of Saxony-Meiningen, this also meant working in the medical deputation and in the agricultural council. Participation in the 7th International Veterinary Congress in Baden-Baden from 7th to 12th August 1899 is also proven.

In 1908 v. Vaerst an appointment as a professor for state veterinary medicine at the Königl. University of Veterinary Medicine Munich (from 1914 veterinary faculty of the Ludwig Maximilians University Munich ). This was also associated with the management of the outpatient veterinary clinic with obstetrics. His experience as a recognized expert and senior expert flowed into the lectures on judicial and police veterinary medicine.

When the First World War broke out , v. Vaerst joined the army and was in the field as a captain and battalion commander from spring 1915 until the end of the war. At the end of the war there was severe suffering. After an operation, v. Vaerst worked as a professor in Munich until Easter 1921 and then moved back to Meiningen, where his health deteriorated further, so that he died a year later on April 1, 1922. He was a very exemplary and recognized university professor. His lectures were well prepared, clearly structured, presented in an understandable manner, and were therefore well attended. He was a member of the Meiningen Freemason Lodge Charlotte to the Three Carnations and belonged to the Corps Teutonia Berlin , Hannoverania Hannover and Saxo-Thuringia Munich.

Gustav von Vaerst married Emmeline born in 1889. Hack, a manufacturer's daughter from Meiningen, and had two sons with her, including Gustav von Vaerst an officer and general of the armored troop (1894–1975).
