Gustave Cohen

Gustave David Cohen (born December 24, 1879 in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode , †  June 10, 1958 in Paris ) was a French literary historian with a focus on medieval studies .

biography

After receiving a doctorate in law, Cohen switched to studying Romance literature.

From 1905 to 1909 he was a lecturer at the Leipzig Institute for Cultural and Universal History , headed by Karl Lamprecht . There he taught French theater history (for example: “Le théâtre français de Dumas à Rostand ”) and contemporary literature, but also held practical exercises in modern French. His successor at the institute was Gaston Monod .

In 1912 Cohen received a call to the University of Amsterdam , in October 1919 he went to the University of Strasbourg . In 1925 he was appointed maître de conférences at the Sorbonne , and in 1932 titular professor.

Cohen was of Jewish faith but converted to Catholicism at the age of 64 .
