Gustave Eugène Castan

Gustave Eugène Castan (born December 23, 1823 in Geneva , † July 27, 1892 in Crozant ) was a Swiss landscape painter , engraver and lithographer .

Live and act

Castan studied in Alexandre Calame's studio from 1843 to 1848 , accompanied him to Italy in 1844 and to the Bernese Oberland the following year .

During his studies he made friends with the French painter Eugène Castelnau and followed him to Paris in 1849 . In 1850 he visited France again and met the painter Auguste Ravier there. In 1852 he met Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot , who had a decisive influence on him.

In 1856 he was mobilized because of the Neuchâtel trade and painted current scenes. In 1857, accompanied by Corot, he attended the Paris Salon , after which he traveled to Brittany and Normandy . He divided his time between Switzerland and France. In the province of Berry he visited George Sand . He discovered the landscapes on the Creuse . He co-founded the Crozant School of Painting.

In 1865 Castan was one of the founders of the Swiss Society of Painters and Sculptors and was elected chairman in 1871.
