The Peanuts - The Film

Gute Reise, Charlie Brown (Original title: Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown (and don't come back) ) from 1980 is the fourth Peanuts cartoon. The film is based on the comics by Charles M. Schulz . It is one of the few Peanuts films in which adults also speak. These four adults are a taxi driver who drives Snoopy to Wimbledon , the judge at Snoopy's tennis game, a French teacher and the baron (who can only be seen in silhouette).

action

The film begins with Linus, who tells the class about a student exchange with France. As part of the program, Charlie Brown and Linus will go to Europe to represent their school there. When Charlie Brown comes home, he finds a letter in the mailbox. However, this letter is written in French and Charlie cannot read it. Suddenly Peppermint Patty calls and says that she and Marcie should also go to France as exchange students. Later, the four of them are bid farewell to their friends at the airport, who shout, “ Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown! "Followed by Lucy, who calls" and don't come back ".

Snoopy and Woodstock travel in first grade, the others in second. During the flight, Charlie shows the others the letter. Marcie, who has French at school, translates the letter. The letter says that he was invited to the Chateau du Malvoisin (The Bad Neighbor's Castle). Under the letter is the name of the girl Violette . But Charlie doesn't know this girl.

The plane lands in London. While the troop tour the city, Snoopy and Woodstock take a taxi to Wimbledon. But because of their bad behavior, the two are kicked out. A short time later they are collected by the others. Together they drive to Victoria Station , where they board the Orient Express to the southern English port city of Dover . From there they reached by airboat after a short time Calais .

Adventure in France

In the port of Calais, the Peanuts go to the car rental company and borrow an old Citroën 2CV . Snoopy is the driver. After a few meters, Snoopy had his first accident because he stopped in the middle of a roundabout. After some nasty French insults to Marcies, the troops continue their journey. You drive inland on country roads via Abbeville and Rouen . The engine fails in the middle of a French town. While Snoopy is repairing the damage, Charlie Brown is supposed to buy bread. But Snoopy clamps a piece of the baguette with the hood and Charlie is the only one who doesn't get a piece of bread. After a while they stop at the old farm where Peppermint Patty and Marcie are supposed to live. There you will be welcomed by the nice farm boy Pierre . But the others have to move on. When Pierre learns that the others will be staying at the Chateau du Malvoisin , he is frightened and tells Marcie and Peppermint Patty that the castle belongs to the gloomy baron and that it is impossible for Charlie to have been invited to the chateau.

Meanwhile, Charlie, Snoopy and Linus drive on to the chateau. The sky is darkening and a thunderstorm is getting closer. When they reach the chateau, nobody opens the gate. They have no choice but to spend the night in the castle stables. Snoopy is supposed to prove his skills as a guard dog, but after Linus and Charlie fall asleep, Snoopy walks into the next café and listens to songs like Rum and Coca Cola on the jukebox .

When Charlie and Linus wake up the next morning, they find a set breakfast table and notice that they have been rolled up in blankets during the night. Snoopy comes back from the café dog-tired and falls asleep immediately.

Charlie and Linus meet Peppermint Patty, Marcie and Pierre at school and tell them about the terrible night. Pierre now also warns Linus and Charlie about the baron. Pierre also tells that the baron is Violette's guardian .

There are some complications at school because Patty has fallen in love with Pierre and she has to sit next to Charlie.

After school, Linus and Charlie return to the chateau. Again there is a set table in the stable. Snoopy leaves the two of them again and goes to the café.

Charlie and Linus plan to keep watch themselves during the night. The first half Linus, the second Charlie. When Snoopy is having fun in the bar, the baron enters the café and talks to the bartender. Snoopy learns that the baron is threatening to throw Charlie and Linus out of the chateau. When Linus wakes up in the middle of the night, he notices that Charlie Brown fell asleep. He decides to find out the secret of the chateau on his own and breaks into the castle. He finds Violette in the attic and asks her why she invited Charlie Brown. Violette says that Charlie's grandfather was stationed in this castle during World War II and became a friend of Violette's grandmother. She shows Linus a photo of the two of them and admits that it was a mistake to invite Charlie Brown because her uncle, the baron, hates strangers. Suddenly the baron returns. In her hurry, Violette knocks over a candle and a curtain goes up in flames. Linus yells for help from the window. Charlie Brown wakes up to the screaming and runs into the village to call the fire department .

When Snoopy and Woodstock return to the chateau, the roof is completely on fire. Linus and Violette have now roped down one floor with the comfort blanket. Snoopy fetches a water pump and works with the fire department to put out the fire.

epilogue

At the end of the film, the group is sitting with Violette in the chateau salon. The baron, grateful for the salvation of his castle, always promises to be hospitable. Violette finishes telling her grandmother's story. Peppermint Patty, moved by the romantic story, begins to cry and tries to attract Pierre's attention.

When the Peanuts leave the castle, Violette gives Charlie his grandfather's field bag and kisses him. Pierre cuddles with Marcie, which Patty can not stand and pushes to leave. Everyone says goodbye and finally leaves. When they leave the entrance to the castle, the accident occurs again. Marcie and Snoopy abuse the victims again and finally leave happily.
