The Gutenberg School in Leipzig refers to a school building and the educational institution located in it, the official name of which is Gutenberg School - Vocational School Center of the City of Leipzig . Her areas of expertise are books, offices, printing, media, languages ​​and art.

The building

The Gutenberg School is located at Gutenbergplatz 8 in the Zentrum-Südost district. The four-storey main building is adjoined by two flatter wing structures, which together delimit a green inner courtyard that is about one meter above street level. The west facade is directed to the old Johannisfriedhof , the south facade runs along the Prager Straße.

The light-colored plastered facades are structured horizontally through the economical use of Rochlitz porphyry . A clock face adorns a tower-like elevation of the main building. Rochlitz porphyry dominates the entrance area and the plinth.

The building was constructed from 1928 to 1929 for the book printer training institute and was almost in the center of what was then the graphic quarter . The building was commissioned by the Leipzig Book Printers Association. The architect was Otto Droge , who incorporated various styles into the building, such as New Objectivity outside and Art Deco and Brick Expressionism inside . The northern wing was not built until after 1945.

The school

history

The history of the school goes back to the year 1853, when the bookseller training institute Leipzig was founded in the Ritterstraße with its seat in the old bookseller exchange. It forms one of the two roots of the school, which were only united in 1992. The other is the book printer training institute founded in 1886 in the technical and advanced training school Täubchenweg / corner of Platostraße, which moved into the building described above in 1929. In 1958 it was merged with the Otto Grotewohl company vocational school and in 1965 integrated under the name of the latter into the large graphic company Interdruck, but in 1990 it was taken over by the city of Leipzig under the old name of Gutenbergschule.

The bookseller Higher Level was in the 1902 bookseller house moved and 1911 in a new school building between booksellers and book trade house , which in the Second World War was destroyed. From 1947 the establishment had its headquarters in Goldschmidtstrasse, where it was converted into the company vocational school for the GDR's Volksbuchhandel in 1972 . When it was taken over by the city in 1990, the old name returned. In 1992 the German Bookseller Training Institute and the Gutenberg School Leipzig merged to form the vocational school center in the building on Gutenbergplatz.
