Guy Bleus (born October 23, 1950 in Hasselt ) is a Belgian artist and author .

life and work

Art and archive

Bleus deals with conceptual art ( mail art , visual poetry ) and performance . His work encompasses various areas, including administration (which he calls "art administration"), postal and olfactory communication.

In 1978 he founded “The Administration Center - 42.292”, a large art archive with works and information from 6000 artists from more than 60 countries (2012). "Guy Bleus has one of the best mail art archives in Europe, if not the world."

Bleus was the first artist to systematically use fragrances in the visual arts. Since 1979 he has shown "scent paintings", perfumed objects, and sent aromatic plants. He also held “Spray Performances” in which he sprayed a mist of scent over the audience.

He also used the possibilities of communication media as art with projects such as "Indirect Correspondence" and "Post with Balloons" (1979). Together with the artist Charles François, he first used digital equipment (computer and modem) for artistic communication in 1989. He has also used digital storage media such as microfilm, CD-ROM and DVD-ROM for artistic works.

Network and projects

The international art projects that Bleus has organized are numerous, for example “Are you experienced? LHFS ”(1981),“ Mail Art Atlas ”(1981–83),“ Telegraphie ”(1983),“ Cavellini Festival 1984 ”,“ Art is Books ”(1991),“ Fax Performances ”(1992–1993), "Private Art Detective: Sealed Confessions", and "Building Plan & Schemes" (1993).

He wrote many texts on the subject of net art. About his essay “Exploring Mail Art” (1984) Géza Perneckzy wrote: “The study by Guy Bleus surpasses all publications with theoretical weight and conciseness”. In addition, he worked on many publications such as "Mail Art" by Piotr Rypson, "Eternal Network" by Chuck Welch or "Postkarten - Cartoline d'Artista" by Vittore Baroni. He participated in many artist magazines.

In 1994 he opened the art gallery E-Mail-Art Archiv in Hasselt (until 1999). More than 40 exhibitions of mail art, fax and internet art have taken place in this non-profit art space. The following German artists were exhibited: Jürgen O. Olbrich , Klaus Groh , Géza Perneczky , Peter Küstermann, and Timm Ulrichs . In 1995 he realized the “Artistamps Collection”, the first mail art catalog on CD-ROM. With the participation of artists such as Vittore Baroni, Ken Friedman, John Held Jr., Ruud Janssen, György Galántai, Pawel Petasz and Géza Perneczky, he published the first "E-Mail-Art-Kunst- & Internet-Manifest" in 1997 his electronic magazine ( e-zine ).

After a bureaucratic adventure that lasted over 20 years, in 2003 he (together with Jean Spiroux) realized the very first official postage stamp on the subject of "Mail Art". It was printed by the Belgian Post Service with a circulation of four million.

From 2005 to 2006 Guy Bleus organized the olfactory mail art project “Scents, Locks & Kisses” with 778 artists from 43 countries in the cultural center Z 33. A slide show with all the works of the participating artists is available on the website.

A retrospective of his works took place in the cultural center of Hasselt in 2010. The publication "Pêle-Mêle: Guy Bleus ® - 42.292" had bracts perfumed with lavender essence and included a re-edition of his 1979 identity card from the planet Mars.
