Guy Edward John Patrick Garvey (born March 6, 1974 in Bury , Greater Manchester , England ) is an English musician and singer. He is the lead singer of the music group Elbow .

youth

Garvey grew up as one of seven siblings, five of whom were older sisters, in a working-class family in Bury. His parents were interested in politics, so that in large groups around the dinner table there were often political discussions. When Garvey was thirteen, his parents divorced.

Garvey met at the age of 16 on the already existing band with the other founding members of the later group Elbow Mark Potter, Richard Jupp, Pete Turner. 10 years after that first meeting, they released their first album. The band's history has been shaped for a long time by on the one hand great success with the critics, but on the other hand only low sales figures. The commercial success came after an 18-year collaboration between the band in 2008 with the fourth studio album The Seldom Seen Kid .

In the course of the collaboration, Garvey established himself in addition to his leading role as the band's singer, above all as a text writer but also as a producer on some albums. Garvey also plays a variety of instruments, such as guitar and percussion, during Elbow's live performances.

In addition to his work as a musician, he is best known in Great Britain as a radio host for music programs on BBC 6 Music and XFM. He is also active as an artist and repertoire manager for the music publisher “Skinny Dog Records”. Garvey is also committed to charity. He participates in several campaigns at the Mines Advisory Group against the use of landmines . Garvey wrote a monthly column in the Manchester edition of Time Out magazine .
