The Gymnapogonini are a tribe of the cardinalfish (Apogonidae). All species of the four genera are found in the coastal Red Sea and in the tropical Indo-Pacific from the coast of East Africa to Japan in the north and east to Hawaii and French Polynesia .

features

The small fish are 2.5 to 7.5 cm long. Their body is translucent and unscaled ( Gymnapogon ) or covered with large round scales or large, little developed comb scales. The sideline extends over 23 to 24 scales or consists of free neuromasts. It can be interrupted in the middle. The edge of the preoperculum is smooth, on its corner there are one or more spines. The caudal fin is forked or rounded. The hypuralia 1 + 2 have grown together, the hypuralia 3 + 4 are exposed or grown together with the urostyle. The supramaxillary, a bone of the upper jaw, is missing. Six infraorbitalia (eye ring bones). There are some enlarged teeth on the premaxillary and lower jaw. The palatal teeth are brush-shaped, sometimes also caniform on the vomer .
