The grammar school "Am Breiten Teich" in Borna was founded in 1873 as a secondary school of the second order and is now a municipal grammar school . The school building was built 1907–1908, renovated 1991–1998 and expanded in 2012, the older part is a listed building .

history

Founded in 1873, the school had four classes in the first school year of 1874, which were housed in different rooms in the city. For example, one class learned in the Ratskeller of the town hall. The first school building was erected on Dinterplatz (today's Dinterschule) by 1876.

As the school grew continuously, classes had to be taught outside of the school building again just a few years later. Then a new school building was built just 13 years after it opened. This building on Königsstrasse is now a branch of the Markkleeberg vocational school center .

After the school was transferred to state administration in 1906, it moved into the newly built school building on January 15, 1908, which is still in use today. At that time the school was run as a secondary school .

During the Second World War the school served as a refuge for refugees and as a reserve hospital.

After that it was run from 1948 as Oberschule Borna , 1961 as Extended Oberschule Borna and then from 1965 until the turn of the century as Extended Oberschule "Wilhelm Pieck" .

In November 1992, the school was given its current name of high school "Am Breiten Teich" . From 1991 to 1998 the inside of the building was completely renovated for 3 million DM. Since the school was merged with the second Borna grammar school, the Pestalozzi grammar school, in 2006, the side building and the entire basement had to be expanded. In the course of this, the facade and the roof were renovated. On August 10, 2009, the mayor of Borna officially handed over the converted attic, which contains six classrooms and a large consultation room for the teachers. There is a gymnasium right next to the school building , which has been used as a cafeteria since January 9, 2012 . A new wing with new specialist cabinets and classrooms was built right next to the school building and put into operation on September 5, 2012. There is a connecting passage between this and the cafeteria. A new school yard was also laid out. Furthermore, an elevator was added to the existing building.

Architecture and buildings

The school building was built by city architect Hofman according to plans by the architect Wiliam Kempe from Bautzen, a former student of the school. The house was then clad with yellow terranova plaster and had a roof covered with red tiles. The color scheme was restored in the course of the renovation. The architecture shows stylistic features of the Neo-Baroque , but is overall rather simple in the sense of the contemporary reform style . In the architectural jewelry there are also forms that are clearly influenced by Art Nouveau .

The school has an auditorium with an organ. In the stairwell there is a memorial plaque for the students who died in World War I.

A frequently recurring motif in the architectural decoration of the building is the owl , which symbolizes the wisdom of thought and action. The owl can also be found in the school's logo today.
