history

The Gymnasium Nepomucenum was founded in 1743 by Maximilian Ulrich von Kaunitz as a Progymnasium . In 1746 he built the first school at his own expense. The management of the grammar school was entrusted to the Franciscans of the Order of Saxonia , who had to assign three professors. When numerous monasteries were closed as a result of the secularization at the beginning of the 19th century, the Franciscan monastery in Rietberg remained in existence by royal decree, with consideration for the high school he ran, after the population had campaigned for the continuation of the high school. Since the Franciscans were not allowed to accept novices after the secularization until 1842 , they could not keep the grammar school due to a lack of staff. As the last Franciscan active at the grammar school, Father Suitbert Sander died on June 12, 1853. From 1841 an annual subsidy from the state secured the basis of the Progymnasium in Rietberg, so that secular teachers could be employed and the sponsorship of the school was transferred to the state. The establishment of a Konvikt at the grammar school in 1838/39 failed due to the objection of influential Rietberg circles against such a "begging hostel".

Girls were only admitted to co-education from Quinta in 1939, but only up to the then 5th grade, today: 9th grade or Obertertia. So the boys born in 1944 were provided with some instruction by teacher Alois Oebbeke in the summer as air force helpers in flak positions for several months. The Progymnasium existed until 1943.

Since 1972 it has been a full high school with a fully developed, differentiated upper level, Bruno Feuerborn (1929–2017) was headmaster from 1978 to 1994, his successor from 1995 was Peter Esser, since 2016 Matthias Stolper has headed the school.
