The St. Christophorus grammar school is a Christian-Catholic private grammar school of the Münster diocese in Werne (North Rhine-Westphalia). The name of the grammar school goes back to Saint Christopher .

General

In addition to the surrounding cities and communities, Dortmund, around 25 kilometers away, is also part of the catchment area. School projects such as the wind orchestra or the Cantos choir, which regularly give concerts that are well-known nationwide and have already been awarded several cultural prizes, have contributed to its popularity.

The St. Christophorus grammar school cooperates with the neighboring municipal Anne Frank grammar school. So z. B. for years in the three natural science subjects advanced courses. At the beginning of the 2014/15 school year, 756 students attended the grammar school, 414 of them female and 342 male. The teaching staff consisted of 63 teachers (35 female, 28 male, including six trainee teachers ).

In 2011 the school was recognized as a European school in North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

The school was founded on April 19, 1955 by the Arnstein Fathers as the first grammar school in the city of Werne. At the beginning the school was an all boys school with an attached boarding school . It was first located on Kirchplatz and the boarding school students were housed in the neighboring Homann House (today Karl Pollender City Museum ). After just one year, the company moved to its current location in 1956/57. Girls have been attending grammar school since 1966.

In 1982 the high school was transferred from the Arnstein Fathers to the diocese of Münster. Nevertheless, the fathers continued to work in the school service - among other things as headmasters, teachers and school chaplains .

In 1991 the new building was completed after seven years of construction, in which mainly art, music and computer rooms are set up. Today the school consists of the old building, the new building completed in 1991, a chapel, two gyms (built in 1955 and 1980), sports fields and a science center with chemistry, biology and physics rooms. Furthermore, the convent building of the Arnstein Order and the former boarding school, which is now used as a workshop for art and music projects and where the rehearsal rooms for the school bands are located, are located on the site. In April 2010, a new canteen was inaugurated and opened in the part that was formerly used as accommodation for asylum seekers.

In 2010 it became known that in the course of the abuse scandal of the Catholic Church in the 1950s to 1970s there were allegedly cases of abuse in the boarding school that was then still part of the school.

From May 2012 to June 2013 a new single gym was built to replace the small gym that was built in 1955 and has since been demolished.

Since 2015, refugees, mainly from Syria and Iraq, have been accommodated in the former boarding school building.

Student exchange and international contacts

The high school has student exchange programs with schools in Lytham St. Annes (England), Swords (Ireland), Lyon and Reims (France), Poggibonsi (Italy), Ełk (Poland) and Viña del Mar (Chile). The exchange with the St. Marie day school in Lyon took place for the 40th time in 2010. Since 2009, schoolchildren have been carrying out a four-week China project entitled Welt: Klasse Werne . Since 2012 there has been an annual project in Kenya as part of the Welt: Klasse program . An exchange with a school in Peru was also held in 2012.

Alumni Association

The alumni association Alte Werner Gymnasiasten eV emerged, as can be recognized by the name, at the time when the grammar school was the only one in Werne. It organizes an alumni celebration every year and, in cooperation with the school, the career information event (BIV). The aim of the BIV is for former students to present their studies and their choice of profession in order to offer the current students an orientation aid for choosing a profession in an open presentation. A wide range of occupational fields is covered.

In addition, the association has developed an online portal with the career information and alumni network, or BIENE for short, which enables the exchange of professional information throughout the year.
