The Anne Frank Gymnasium (AFG) is a municipal high school in the city of Werne. It has 650 students and 47 teachers with 5 trainee teachers (as of 2020). It is named after the Jewish girl Anne Frank , who perished in the Holocaust and who achieved worldwide fame through her diary . The person Anne Frank is a central component of the school profile.

description

The Anne Frank Gymnasium is located in Werne , in the southern Münsterland . In addition to Werne itself, the catchment areas are its own rural districts, the surrounding communities of Nordkirchen , Südkirchen , Ascheberg and Selm and the neighboring town of Bergkamen .

The school is one of the two grammar schools in Werne with the neighboring St. Christophorus grammar school , with which there is cooperation in the upper level.

In the 2019/2020 school year, 650 students attended the grammar school, who were taught by 47 teachers and 5 trainee teachers. The headmaster is Marcel Damberg, who until 2018 was deputy headmaster at Freiherr-vom-Stein-Gymnasium Hamm for many years .

Bilingual branch and other language options

Since the school year 2010/11, the Anne Frank Gymnasium has been the only school in Werne to offer a continuous German-English bilingual branch. It is based on the subjects geography (from grade 7 to high school graduation) and biology (from grade 8 to high school graduation). According to the Ministry of Education, this course offers students the opportunity to follow a "particularly effective path to high foreign language, intercultural and professional skills". In addition to English as the first foreign language, Latin and French are offered as a second foreign language from Grade 6 and French as a third foreign language from Grade 8. In addition, Italian can be taken as a third or fourth foreign language from the introductory phase. In 2015, the profile of MINT and sport (grades 5 to 8) was expanded to include supplementary lessons.

Basic and advanced courses

In addition to the usual basic courses in biology (also bilingual German-English), chemistry, German, English, geography (also bilingual German-English), French, history, Italian, art, Latin, mathematics, music, philosophy, physics, Religion (ev./kath.), Social sciences and sport offer the following advanced courses: German, English, French, geography, history, social sciences, mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics. Since the school year 2016/17, the subject of sport has also been offered in the advanced course. What is also special is that philosophy is taught from year five to the Abitur and "is often chosen as the third or fourth Abitur subject ."

Extra-curricular

The school also has a diverse AG offer ("AFG Plus"), which is intended to promote the various interests and talents of the students: The musical-artistic area (e.g. middle and high school choir, school band) is also here represented as the linguistic (e.g. Cambridge Certificate , DELF , Latin Theater), the sociological-philosophical (e.g. Philosophy-AG, Environment-AG), the scientific-technical (e.g. Robot-AG, 3D -Print , chemistry workgroups ), legal (legal studies workgroup ) or sporty (e.g. ski and canoe workgroups). As part of working groups, there is regular participation in robotics competitions, in other various scientific competitions (e.g. the Chemistry Day, Dechema student competition "Dechemax" and International Chemistry Olympiad ) for youth debates and the national history competition. The great interest in philosophical topics is also reflected in successful participation in the federal and state competition Philosophical Essay . The AFG regularly provides the Ministry of Education with philosophy teachers as jurors who work during the Winter Academy in Münster. The award of the seal School without Racism - School with Courage in January 2014 also goes back to an AG.

Awards and certificates

In 2019, the Anne-Frank-Gymnasium was awarded the NRW career choice seal due to its excellent study and career choice orientation. Since 2019 the school has been the “Digital Model School of the Arnsberg District Government” and since February 2020 the Anne Frank Gymnasium has been functioning as a digital reference school for “Zukunftsschulen NRW - Netzwerk Lernkultur. Individual support ”. After more than 10 years of successful USA exchange program, AFG received the GAPP certificate (German American Partnership Program). In addition, the grammar school has been a European school since 2015: recertification is due in 2020. In August 2020, AFG received the certificate as a "MINT-friendly school" and the rare award as "Digital School 2020".

The AFG cooperates with numerous partners from the local economy and with regional universities. The Anne Frank Gymnasium is the only school in Germany to have concluded a framework cooperation agreement with the Fraunhofer Society . Together with the Fraunhofer application center SYMILA in Hamm, projects are being worked on in the context of digital transformation in schools and everyday life.

The orientation clearly focuses on the individual talents. The lessons are digitally accompanied in the three focal points bilingual - MINT - sport. The MINT profile has been expanded again in recent years. For years, the city of Werne has been providing excellent teaching conditions through modern experimental rooms in all natural science subjects. In this context, it can also be seen that the Fund of the Chemical Industry recognized the AFG as "particularly worthy of support" in 2017 and supports it accordingly.

history

The Anne Frank Gymnasium was opened in 1966 as an all- girls high school . At that time without a building of their own, 36 sextans from the municipal modern-language grammar school for girls i. E. temporarily entered the Marienschule Werne and opened the school under the provisional management of Mr. Wieloch from Lünen. A short time later, a prefabricated building for the school could be built on Bahnhofstrasse, into which the pupils moved.

Four years later, a land purchase to build a school center was made in Lindert, which was completed in 1975. The Anne-Frank-Gymnasium Werne, which received a modern extension in 2003 and a cafeteria in 2011, is located in this building complex.

On March 6, 1976, the triple gymnasium was inaugurated, and the school was officially opened on June 19. In 1980 the grammar school was given the name Anne Frank grammar school , which it still bears today. Today the school is no longer a girls' grammar school, but a grammar school for both sexes. The school is now called "Anne Frank Gymnasium, municipal high school - EUROPE SCHOOL".

Since the 2013/2014 school year, the technical prerequisites have been created by the city of Werne in order to receive seamless WLAN in all parts of the building. With the Future Classes program, the school has embarked on the path of digital transformation. Since then, all pupils in the new fifth grade have received their own iPad, which is financed by their parents and the association. In the summer of 2021, all learners will have their own iPad at their disposal, which will be actively used in the classrooms in the subject rooms equipped with smartboards and smart TVs. Since 2019, the school has therefore been the "Digital Model School of the Arnsberg District Government in North Rhine-Westphalia". Every week, school administrators from North Rhine-Westphalia seek advice on-site about the digitization of teaching in terms of technical, personal, methodological and didactic aspects.

In January 2020 the alumni association “Alumni of the Anne Frank Gymnasium Werne” was founded to enable the graduates to have a lively connection with the school community. The high school students should also benefit from the experience of the alumni as part of the course and career choice orientation. Climatologist Dirk Barbi was one of the first alumni to respond to an invitation from the alumni association.

Student exchanges and partner schools

Poland

The school organizes student exchanges in different countries. Since 1989 the Anne Frank Gymnasium has organized an exchange with Gimnazjum nr 2 Roberta Schumana in Walcz , Poland , one of the twin cities of Werne. At the beginning of each school year (mostly in September) around 15 students from the Anne Frank Gymnasium in grade 9 spend a week with their exchange students in Walcz, who then visit their German exchange students in Werne in June of the same school year.

USA replaces England

After a lively exchange with the Queen Mary Senior School and King Edward VII Senior School in Lytham St. Annes , Great Britain , a new student exchange was launched in 2008 with Warren Central High School in Bowling Green , Kentucky . In the meantime, the exchange has been expanded to three schools in Bowling Green, so that up to 25 pupils in the introductory phase can now take part each year.

American teachers in AFG English class

The Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky is another exchange destination of the Anne Frank Gymnasium Werne. For the international part of its teacher training, Western Kentucky University enables up to 20 trainee teachers to do an internship of several weeks at Anne Frank Gymnasium, where native speakers are used as foreign language assistants in English classes. The efforts of the Werner Kollegium are recognized by the WKU, especially with regard to the initiator of the exchange, English and religion teacher Heike Armbrust. In March 2020, trainee lawyers from AFG Werne were supposed to travel to Bowling Green for the first time as part of a project with the center for practical school teacher training in Hamm, with the approval of the Arnsberg district government , in order to complete their internship in other types of schools on site. Due to the corona, this exchange could not take place.

France and Italy

In the 2013/2014 school year, the Anne-Frank-Gymnasium also took part for the first time together with the now closed Konrad-Adenauer-Realschule from Werne in the student exchange with the Collège Immaculée Conception in Bailleul , France . The French students visit Werne every November, the return visit of the students from Werne takes place every year in April. The school conducts an exchange with Naples , Italy , as part of the Italian lessons .
