High school on the market

The Gymnasium am Markt ( GamMa for short ) is - next to the Cato Bontjes van Beek-Gymnasium - one of two grammar schools in Achim in the Lower Saxony district of Verden . The school is housed in the listed building of the market school, which has now been in existence for over 125 years, and its extensions.

history

In the 16th century Lüder Clüver had the first historically documented school in Achim built next to the St. Laurentius Church . Towards the end of the 19th century, a new building was planned for reasons of lack of space. The new school was built according to plans by Achim architect Johann Meislahn as a brick building in neo-Gothic style on the paddock on Koppelweg, which is part of the district administration. The building was decorated with arches and ornaments on the outer walls. Originally there was the inscription "1894 / Gott zur Ehr / Der Gemeinde zum Segen" above the entrance portal, which, with the exception of the year, has now been moved to the inner courtyard.

Since its construction, the building first housed a primary school , then a middle school - for which the top floor was expanded from 1926 to 1930 - and finally an orientation stage . In 2005, the decision was made to accommodate the district's fourth full high school in the market school, for which purpose it was to be converted for around 6.3 million euros after it had already received additions and extensions over the course of its history.

Today “Achim's oldest educational institution” is one of the regional attractions and has been included in the city tour.

high school

The Gymnasium am Markt has existed since 2006 and has been a certified European school since 2014 with the declared aim of strengthening the appreciation of the idea of the European project. In addition, there is a clear focus on the mathematical and scientific branch, which means that the school has been included in the network of MINT -EC schools.

Outside of the core lessons, numerous working groups are offered, including on beekeeping , theater , singing , art , robotics , as well as rowing and school gardens . Since the beginning of the 2017/2018 school year, there has also been a wind class .
