The wayside cross

The listed Gymnich Cross is on Bahnhofstrasse in Nörvenich , Düren district , North Rhine-Westphalia .

In the Bahnhofstrasse, about diagonally across from the town hall , there is a cross that was erected in 1911 by the Gymnich siblings. On the front it bears the phrase My Jesus Mercy , on the back is engraved Dedicated by the Gymnich siblings in 1911 .

The cross is at the entrance to the village at that time. The “mayor's office” had only been built a year earlier, making it the first house in the village. Before that was the Gymnichshof, the property of the donors , which today belongs to the von Laufenberg family.

Until about the middle of the 19th century, the Golzheimer Pfädchen led into the village at the location of the cross . That was a narrow dirt road that led across the district from Golzheim to Nörvenich to the grain mill . For many centuries the farmers of Golzheim had been obliged to have their grain ground in the electoral mill in Nörvenich. The Golzheim path was the shortest connection to the forced mill .

Until the middle of the 20th century, the Corpus Christi procession went to Oberbolheim every two years . Then the blessing was given at the Gymnich Cross on the altar erected and decorated by the von Laufenberg family .
