Gymnocalycium kroenleinii is a species of plant in the genus Gymnocalycium from the cactus family(Cactaceae). Thespecific epithet honors Marcel Kroenlein (1928–1994), the longtime director of the Jardin Exotique de Monaco .

description

Gymnocalycium kroenleinii grows individually with light green, brownish pink tinged, flattened spherical shoots that reach a diameter of up to 6 centimeters and form a short beet root. The eight to ten ribs are notched across and divided into conspicuous, 7 mm long, chin-like bumps. The awl, irregularly curved thorns are brown-gray and brown at their base. There is a single central spine up to 2 centimeters long, which can also be missing. The seven to nine (rarely from three) radial spines are close to protruding and up to 1.7 centimeters long. One of them is directed downwards and a little longer, the others sideways.

The short and wide funnel-shaped, pink or whitish flowers reach a length of up to 3 centimeters and a diameter of the same amount. The stamens are pink, styles and stigmas are white. The cone-shaped pericarpel is 7 mm long and 5 mm wide. The spherical, violet to pink-gray fruits , slightly tapered towards the ends, have a diameter of up to 1.2 centimeters. They jump up vertically and contain pot-shaped, matt black seeds with a large hilum and a size of 1.2 to 1.4 mm in length and 1.0 to 1.2 mm in thickness.

Propagation can only take place by sowing, since the species does not sprout.
