economy
The area got its name from the gypsum (English gypsum ) that is mined here. Gypsum mining is the engine of the region's economy and population growth. The quarrying sites, which are spread over the whole area of Gypsum, increasingly lead to karst phenomena in the form of sinkholes . Therefore, the entire section, especially the main mining and loading areas, is often referred to simply as a sinkhole by the residents . The United States Gypsum Company is based here. In addition to gypsum mining, its job is to monitor the water balance and earth movements. The area is made accessible by a railway line for goods traffic and the transport of the gypsum mineral. The dolomite containing gypsum from Gypsum is in Ohio and surrounding states as a fertilizer used in agriculture. The soil can not only be supplied with calcium , but also magnesium .
