Gyula Horgos

Gyula Horgos (born July 22, 1920 in Nagyvárad , Bihor County , Romania ; † June 11, 1994 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian politician of the Party of Hungarian Working People MDP (Magyar Dolgozók Pártja) and finally of the Hungarian Socialist Workers Party MSZMP (Magyar Szocialista Munkáspárt ) , who, among other things, was Minister for the Metallurgy and Machine Industry between 1963 and 1975.

Life

Horgos, whose father worked as a shoemaker and later a train driver , completed a degree in mechanical engineering at the Palatine Josef University for Technology and Economics (József Nádor Műszaki és Gazdaságtudományi Egyetemen) after attending school , which he graduated in 1943. He then worked as a mechanical engineer at the vehicle manufacturer Manfréd Weiss Stahl- und Metallwerke AG Csepel , before he went to the Institute for Machine Tool Industry in Moscow for a four-year internship in 1949 . In 1945 he joined the Communist Party KMP (Kommunisták Magyarországi Pártja) .

After returning to Hungary in 1953, Horgos became an adjunct professor at the Department of Machine Tool Construction of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the Budapest University of Technology BME (Budapesti Műszaki Egyetem) , before he became Chief Engineer of the Machine Tool Division of the State Iron and Steel Company Mátyás Rákosi in 1954 and then in July 1955 Chief engineer of the mechanical engineering department of the vehicle manufacturer Csepel became.

On December 1, 1955, Horgos initially switched to the civil service and served as Vice President of the National Planning Office until April 16, 1957, but then returned to the Csepel iron and steel works to become technical director. In 1957 he also took over a professorship at the Technical University of Budapest BME. Subsequently, on April 14, 1960, he was first Vice-Minister and then on February 10, 1962, First Vice-Minister for Metallurgy and Machine Industry. In addition, he was involved between 1961 and 1974 as Vice President of the Scientific Society of Engineers GTE (Gépipari Tudományos Egyesület) , of which he has been a member since 1974.

After a reshuffle of the second government of Prime Minister János Kádár , he took over the office of Minister for Metallurgy and Machine Industry (Kohó- és Gépipari Miniszter) on March 20, 1963 and held this position in the cabinet of Gyula Kállai , in the cabinet of Jenő Fock as well as in the government of Prime Minister György Lázár until his replacement by Tivadar Nemeslaki on July 4, 1975.

On November 28, 1970 he was elected to the Xth Party Congress as a member of the Central Committee (ZK) of the MSZMP and belonged to this until the XI. Congress on March 22, 1975.
