location

Street in Gyzi

Gyzi is located approx. 1.5 km northeast of the center of Athens directly on the Leoforos Alexandras, which also represents the southern border of the district. Neighboring neighborhoods include Kypseli , Polygono , Ambelokipi , Koudouriotika , Neapoli and Pedio Areos .

etymology

The name goes back to the Greek genre and monumental painter Nikolaos Gyzis , whose name in Greek is roughly pronounced Jisi ; However, since he was a representative of the Munich School and signed his works with Latin letters, the name was mistakenly pronounced as Gyzi, which was supposedly German. This then became the fixed term for the district, but not for the painter.

Cityscape

Gyzi is one of the most densely populated districts of Athens. To this day, narrow streets, closed development and few public green spaces characterize the appearance. The usually multi-storey buildings have a predominantly residential use.

The development of the area took place in the 1960s and 1970s and began around the Platia Gyzi and the north-south Odos Nikolaou Gyzi , which connects the square with the Leoforos Alexandras .

traffic

The Ambelokipi station on line 3 of the Athens Metro is located approx. 400 m east of Gyzi on Leoforos Alexandras.
